Thoughts on Fear (from Joshua)

“Be strong and courageous.  Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”  Joshua 1:9

The story told in Joshua is an amazing one of how God placed the land of Canaan into the hands of the Israelites.  It’s full of stories of armies and battles and deliverance!  Can you imagine the pressure Joshua must have felt leading this entire nation?  Yet, God comforts him and lets him know he has no reason to fear.

I’ve mentioned before that I am a fearful person.  I am one of “those moms” who doesn’t like her children out of her sight.  I hate crowds.  I envision every stranger as a child abductor and everyone who passes my car in the parking lot as a potential thief.  (I’m sure there’s plenty to psychoanalyze there).  I have a hard time getting out of my comfort zone and embracing change, or even standing up for things I know are right.  Ouch.

I’d like to think I’m doing better in this area, but I see this verse as just another reminder that I need to put more trust in God and not live in fear of the unknown.  He will never leave or forsake me.
