Grandma’s Chocolate Caramel Brownies

Nothing bad ever came out of Grandma Timaeus’s kitchen!  She was the queen of desserts… and one of my favorites she always made were chocolate caramel brownies.  This is her top secret recipe.  Except I did remove the cup of pecans.  We have a nut allergy in our house.  Anyway, these are sooooo yummy.  Let’s get started.

12 oz. bag chocolate chips
1 box German chocolate cake mix
1.5 stick butter
1 large can evaporated milk
1 cup chopped pecans (I omitted)
75 caramels

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Lightly grease 9×13 pan.  Combine cake mix, butter, and 3/4 cup evaporated milk.  Batter will be thick.  Take 1/2 of batter and spread into pan.

Bake for 10 minutes and let cool.  After cool, pour chocolate chips (and pecans) on top.

Take caramels and 1/2 to 2/3 cup evaporated milk and warm in a pan until liquid.

Pour over chocolate chips.

Spread remaining batter over top.

Bake in over 20-25 minutes.  Let cool before cutting (the hardest part!)
