When Sybella arrived at the doorstep of St Mortain half mad with grief and despair the convent were only too happy to offer her refuge – but at a price. The sisters of this convent serve Death, and with Sybella naturally skilled in both the arts of death and seduction, she could become one of their most dangerous weapons.
But her assassin’s skills are little comfort when the convent returns her to the life that nearly drove her mad. Her father’s rage and brutality are terrifying, and her brother’s love is equally monstrous. But when Sybella discovers an unexpected ally she discovers that a daughter of Death may find something other than vengeance to live for…
I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book picks up right where Grave Mercy left off. For some reason, I thought this was going to be just Sybella’s story separate and apart from Ismae’s. She turned out to be a much different character in this book than I imagined her in the first, but once I accepted the change, I enjoyed this book immensely – maybe even better than the first. I absolutely adore Beast and his sidekick. It’s a story that goes in some very dark places — incest, rape & cruelty… but it’s about overcoming a haunting past and moving forward. I think it’s done well.
Would I recommend this to fellow book lovers? Yes.
Would I recommend this to my teen daughter? No. Some of it is still a little too mature I think.
