31 Days with the Spirit: Blasphemy

And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.  Matthew 12:31-32

Two additional verses like this one are found also in Luke 12:10 and Mark 3:29.

Wow.  So, this verse has always intrigued me.  Is there such thing as an unpardonable sin?  Well, yes, according to these scriptures.  I think this is different than just resisting the Spirit (Acts 7:51).  This is a complete rejection of God and His Spirit.  It’s attributing things that are of the Spirit to something else.

My Bible study group discussed this at length one evening, and the point was made that if you are questioning whether or not you’ve blasphemed against the Spirit, then you probably haven’t.  Blasphemy against the Spirit would be very deliberate and rebellious.

Still, it’s interesting to note that the only sin in scriptures that is said to be unforgivable is blasphemy against the Spirit.  I felt it was something important to include in this 31 day study.
