Do Not Love Sleep

“Do not love sleep or you will grow poor;
    stay awake and you will have food to spare.”  Proverbs 20:13

Laziness.  Doing nothing when something needs doing.  It is so very easy for me to hit the snooze button in the mornings.  After all, my bed is so nice and warm and cozy.  But the Proverbs author says “Do not love sleep.”

I think sometimes we use sleep as a defense mechanism.  We think that if we go to sleep all our problems will go away.  The reality is, however, that our problems and jobs are still there waiting for us when we wake up.  I have learned that even though I want to stay in bed, my day gets off to a much better start if I make myself get up and go for a jog.  When we pursue our dreams and meet our lives and daily challenges with energy and not apathy, we can achieve great things!   We will not go hungry.

Does this mean we shouldn’t rest?  Of course not.  Even God took a day of rest.  But he sure was productive those other six days!  Let’s strive to be productive and not lazy.  Who knows what greatness we can achieve?

    I think that if we are not careful, those of us that are not much on sleep, can sin the other way. Not getting enough rest! Usually, things need to be in balance for us to live radically for him!
