31 Days of Music: Phantom of the Opera

Phantom of the Opera is one of my all-time-favorite musicals.  When I was in high school, it was the “Wicked” of its time.  Today, it’s the longest running Broadway show, which has now been showing for 26 years straight.  No other musical has even come close…. the second longest running show on Broadway was Cats, which ran for 18 years.  So, I’m not alone in my love for Phantom.

Phantom1I have seen The Phantom of the Opera in person three times.  The first time was on my one year wedding anniversary, when it came to Houston.  We had FRONT. ROW. Seats.  The experience was unbelievable.  The chandelier fell right over our heads, and we could see the actors expressions with perfect clarity!  Here we are as young whippersnappers all dolled up for the event:

The second time, we again went in Houston, with some friends of ours.  The show was every bit as wonderful, but the experience was not quite as awesome as seeing it for the first time, and on the first row…

Just recently, as my girls are getting older and into Broadway shows, I have been able to share my love of the musical with them.  My youngest, in particular, LOVES the music from Phantom and goes around the house singing the songs constantly.  For her birthday she wanted a Phantom of the Opera theme (You can take a look at a picture of her awesome cake HERE).  My husband was able to get some discounted tickets through his work to a Dallas production of The Phantom of the Opera the day after her birthday, so we surprised them with a quick trip to Dallas.  It was so much fun watching them watch the show for the first time. I love it when my kids get excited about things I love too!

Next on my list is to read the original book by Gaston Leroux, but my “to read” pile is quite lengthy, so we’ll see when I get to it.

What about you?  Do you have a favorite Broadway musical?
